The Toilets of New York: A Handy Guide to the Best and Worst Public and Semipublic Relief Stations for Those With a Need-To-Know
Published in Paperback by Litterati Books (June, 1990)
Author: Ken Eichenbaum

Missing your Mark
This book is an excellent guide for men. Not so much for tinkle-let's face it, we can pee anywhere. But when your AZT has got you going #2 every 5 minutes, you need a clean, quite place to go. Not one of those filthy bathrooms where the bowl is some jive-talking "holy roller" all down on your lifestyle.
My only gripe with the guide is that it does not point out the bathrooms that have fully functional Glory holes. Maybe in the next edition?

Trout Unlimited's Guide to Pennsylvania Limestone Streams
Published in Paperback by Stackpole Books (February, 2000)
Author: A. Joseph Armstrong

Informative
In this book, Joe listed any stream with a hint of limestone. He gave honest descrtipions, if there were no fish he said so. I just wish he had time to fish some of them more. An all around good book. I have tried some of the out of the way streams he mentioned.

Upstate: Records and Recollections of Northern New York (New York Classics)
Published in Paperback by Syracuse University Press (November, 1990)
Authors: Edmund Wilson and Richard Hauer Costa
Average review score:

Wonderful chapter on unusual religions!
Edmund Wilson is, of course, one of the most critically acclaimed American authors. His book, "Upstate", is, to my knowledge, his only autobiographical work. This book was recommended to me by a brilliant, eccentric co-worker who knows I love great books and remembers that I was reared in the Empire State.

One of the initial chapters of "Upstate" contains the most eye-opening descriptive history of "American" religions I have encountered. I ensure that any reader will gather wonderful fodder for future cocktail parties simply by reading Wilson's chapter on Upstate religions.

The balance of this book will appeal mainly to true Wilson scholars and bibliophiles who appreciate great writing. While Wilson's hand is superb, the content consists mainly of a detailed recitation of the history of Wilson's, rather average, familial line.

Nevertheless, the mere fact that this is the only book review I have written since attending Colgate University twenty-years ago will demonstrate that I loved the book and would highly recommend it to any true reader.

The Used Book Lover's Guide to the Mid-Atlantic States: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania & Delaware (Used Book Lovers' Guide Series)
Published in Paperback by Book Hunter Pr (October, 1997)
Authors: David S. Siegel and Susan Siegel
Average review score:

Great guide for where to shop
I bought the 1993 edition while I was living in Central NY and can only comment on the Central NY listings. I found the format easy to skim through and the maps/directions extremely helpful. All the information you might want is included--phone numbers, hours of operation, genres sold, etc. Occasionally the description of a store's offerings was not quite right, or the place in question no longer existed, but such changes can happen when there are several years between editions. I intend to buy the edition for NC once I get moved in.

Washington by Night
Published in Paperback by Fulcrum Pub (April, 1998)
Author: Volkmar Kurt Wentzel
Average review score:

A stunning look at Washington, DC from a glorious era.
Volkmar Wentzel's Washington by Night captures the stark beauty of the Nation's Capital, and the grandure of a bygone era, that almost defies description.

Filled with pictures taken before the World War II build-up, Wentzel's Washington is a still a sleepy southern town, about to awake to the international stage. Captured in this naive state Washington becomes a foreign city ripe for exploration and the unexpected.

The lush tri-tone images compel close study and readers cannot help but find something new everytime they pick up the book.

Volkmar Wentzel's view of Washington is an insight into the simple and monumental.

What's Free and Cheap in New York
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (June, 1991)
Author: Vincent Frontero
Average review score:

Best read in times like these...
This book is great! Two years ago, I moved back to New York from the South and I was unemployed. I was able to have the best summer because of all the museums, parks and suggestions from this book. Just recently, I spent the day in Central Park riding the carousel and watching sea lions do tricks at the park's zoo. I would never have thought of trying that if it were not for this book. It's a bit dated (1991) with mentions of the former World Trade Center but many of the suggestions are relevant. I wish the author would write another with new things to do in New York. There's no need to cut back on entertainment to save money ...just pick up this book and you can go out for free and cheap fun!

Psychic New York: A Guide to Astrologers, Tarot Readers, Psychics, Palmists, & Numerologists
Published in Paperback by City & Co (May, 1996)
Author: Patricia Collins
Average review score:

Good directory, but should have TESTED the psychics also.
Although this is a good directory, it was ludicrous of the author to publish such a book without first waiting at least a year to see if any or all of the psychic's predictions have come true or even close. The author merely describes each person's style of reading, but offers the reader little or usually no feedback about how ACCURATE the reader was, which is crucial for people looking for a good, quality reading. Paula Roberts, Frank Andrews, Faith McInerney, and Alexander Mallon were the most impressive while Carloyn Clarke and Kathleen Karter were among the most dissappointing. One year later and these last two were wrong about everything.

Brilliant Info!
This book changed my life. It was the first really complete listing I found on psychics out there, and how they were doing their job. I recognized a few of the famous ones (Frank Andrews, Michael Lutin from Vanity Fair, Madalyn Aslan, J.B. Brown) and saw many that I had never heard of before. Each one, and their methodology of reading, was described and commented on in detail, and I found this to be refreshing -- no advertising! I was merely curious at first, but a friend persuaded me to call a few and narrow it down to someone I'd feel comfortable seeing. I ended up going to two. Vastly different, but equally impressive. Felt the need to endorse this book as coming from a person who at first was merely curious and ended up being richly satisfied!

Excellent Information
I felt compelled to add my review after reading the above. This is an excellent book in terms of information, exact price, and detailed commentary on how the psychics conduct their readings. The listing includes a broad range, from the very well-known (Michael Lutin, Frank Andrews, Madalyn Aslan, Maria Papapetros) to the lesser known, some of which we found to be very good, (Laurie Baum, Patti Canova, Cassandra Saulter). Over the past two years, my husband and I and many of our friends have tried up to twelve of the psychics listed in the book. Without doubt, they were all better than anyone we'd gone to before, but not equally good to each other. Of course, this is not the author's fault. She herself advises to call first. But in terms of a comprehensive listing and description on the psychics currently successful in New York, I have found no better one published. Highly recommended.

If You're Thinking of Living in ...All About 115 Great Neighborhoods in and Around New York
Published in Paperback by Times Books (February, 1999)
Authors: Michael J. Leahy, New York Times, and Mike Leahy
Average review score:

Save you money.
This book paints **every** neighborhood in and around NY as being lovely and quaint, even if in reality they are filthy, graffiti-drenched, and not particularly safe. This book complicated my move to NY because, based on it's misinformative "rosey" neighborhood profiles, I went and looked at apartments in a lot of neighborhoods that were filthy and scary. I finally found a great neighborhood to live in, but this book had been no help at all. The sad truth is that not every place in NY is a great neighborhood to live. It's a big city and you have to be careful and avoid the bad places. This book **sinfully** ignores this. It's like they're bending over backwards trying to please every neighborhood council in the city instead of being accurate. I've never felt so ripped off about a book purchase before.

Good but incomplete
I have lived in Manhattan for 13 years, and when it was time to buy I picked up this book. I found it fun to read and helpful in understanding for example the commuting times to each area featured, etc. However it does not include every neighborhood, in fact the area where we finally purchased (Ft. Greene Bklyn) isn't even included in the book. Buy this along with the Zany's guide and you'll get the full picture.

Neighborhood Hunting Made Simple
For many individuals living or planning to move to New York City or its' neighboring suburbs, getting to know the characteristics of the area's many diverse neighborhoods can be very difficult. Moving into the wrong neighborhood can often be both dangerous and unproductive for many outsiders (and even natives) who want to move to due to reasons relating to crime, finances, or proximity to jobs.

Well the New York Times has compiled a book of essays about the area's best communities to live in, which should make the job of choosing the right neighborhood much more easier. "If You're Thinking..." provides plenty of statistical and residential information that will prove helpful to anyone looking for new communities in the city. Although the book is very outdated when it comes to rents (a 2 bedroom in story has shot up to $1,200 in 1999) and the author doesn't really cover the recent changes in the ethnic compositions of some neighborhoods (Astoria, Queens is becoming heavily Brazilian, Colombian, and Mexican; Riverdale in the Bronx has seen a huge influx of Dominican immigrants; Inwood in Manhattan has also a huge Dominican population; etc..).

Overall this is a good book to review your choices before moving to the area, however I feel that an updated version is needed in the market. If you want to check out updated neighborhood information, then search on the web, however read this book to get a good picture of life in the suburbs (most of the info in the book is still up-to-date).
